Government to Launch SWAYAM – An Online Platform with over 1500 Courses

The Government of India is set to launch a new programme called SWAYAM to achieve cardinal principles of the education policy. The three principles are Access, Equity and Quality. The main motto behind this programme is to take the best learning resources of teaching to all. The courses under SWAYAM are all interactive and have been prepared by the best teachers in India. Moreover, the courses are free for Indian residents.  

On SWAYAM, the courses will be hosted in 4 sections:

• Video lecture
• Specially prepared reading material
• Self-assessment tests
• Online discussion forum for clearing the doubts

The government believes that the use of audio-video visuals, multimedia and state of the art technology will enrich the learning experience. In order to ensure the best quality of content, the ministry appointed six National Coordinators which are:

1. NPTEL for engineering
2. UGC for postgraduate education
3. CEC for undergraduate education
4. NCERT & NIOS for school education
5. IGNOU for out of the school students
6. IIMB for management studies

The SWAYAM courses are offered free of cost to the Indian students. Those seeking certifications will have to register themselves for the courses. These students will be offered a certificate after successfully completing the course, with a little fee. All the students will have to appear for an examination at the end of the course, basis which they will be assessed. These grades or marks obtained in the exam are transferable to the records of the student.

SWAYAM has been designed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). SWAYAM can host 80000 hours of learning from over 2000 courses.
