The University Grants Commission (UGC) has cancelled the "College with Potential for Excellence" status of two renowned Delhi University college- Sri Venkateswara College & Gargi College. This was because both the colleges had failed to get the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) approval.
The UGC runs the NAAC every now 7 then to assess the quality of education imparted in institutions. According to the rules, a colleges should obtain at least 3 stars or a B grade to apply for excellence status. The "College with Potential for Excellence" status is given to an institution that has proved its mettle through quality teaching, infrastructure facilities & students' performance. Along with this "status", the institution also receives a grant of anything between Rs. 35 lakh to 1.5 crore to help improve its infrastructure.
Meera Ramachandran, principal of Gargi College was quoted saying, "We haven't received any formal notification yet. But this throws up a strange problem for all colleges of DU. None of the DU colleges have the NAAC accreditation".
