Ankush Mehta, who has enrolled in the B.Com (Hons.) course in Delhi University’s School of Open Learning (SOL) has one regret - unlike his peer, he will not get a real feel of the Four Year Undergraduate Programme.

Mehta is one of the nearly one lakh enrolled students who will miss out on the varsity’s new FYUP that was introduced from this year.

“It is strange that even though DU’s programmes have been given a facelift, nothing has been done for the SOL or NCWEB courses. SOL gets more students than regular DU colleges and it is only fair that we too get to study under the FYUP system than the old three-year undergraduate system,” said Mehta.

An SOL official said, “In the interest of students, we have been requesting the university administration, for quite a while to approve FYUP for School of Open Learning too. Even though we are still awaiting administrative approval on the matter, it is not fair on lakhs of students who come and seek admission here.”

However, university officials said that it was the large number of students in SOL that was proving to be a deterrent.

“Over 2 lakh students seek admission in SOL. Bringing such a big number of students under FYUP is a challenge that is different from managing a few thousand in regular colleges,” said Gulshan Sawhney, deputy dean students’ welfare of DU.
