Students from India who appeared for Class 12-level examinations conducted by foreign examination boards are having a tough time seeking admission in Delhi University.

While foreign nationals seek admission to DU through the foreign students’ registry (FSR), the admission process is not as smooth for Indian nationals appearing for exams organised by foreign boards such as The International Baccalaureate.

Each college has a separate provision for such students. Thus, foreign board students have to visit each college and meet their administrative heads. This process is quite tedious, especially when compared to the uncomplicated nature of centralised admissions, which is in place for the rest of the applicants.

“It is very hard to convince colleges to accept predicted scores. But as DU has no specific guidelines, I have no choice but to visit every college and plead my case,” said an IB board student who wished to remain anonymous.

The varsity has a conversion formula for the grades that students get in the IB board. But since their final results come out only in August, a number of colleges are not very keen on giving them provisional admission.

Lady Shri Ram College for Women holds an entrance exam for students of non-Indian boards. The test comprises three sections: Comprehensive English, Mathematics and Logic, each tallying up to 100 marks. Only students seeking admission in courses such as Bachelor with Honours in Commerce, Mathematics, Economics and Statistics are required to appear for the Mathematics section.

Students are given provisional admission on the basis of this test and their predicted scores.

St Stephen’s College, on the other hand, does not give provisional admission to students belonging to foreign boards. Students can apply for direct admission if their examination board is approved by the Association of Indian Universities. If not, students are required to get an Equivalence Certificate from AIU.
