The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Manav Rachna International University (MRIU) conducted a FDP on ‘Holistic Wellness of Faculty & Academic Productivity recently. The FDP was attended by faculty members from various academic units of the university including FCA, FCH, FMes, FAS, FPA, FMS and FET.

In the introductory session, Prof. Suresh Bedi, Director IQAC and Dean FCA introduced the programme to the participants. He emphasized that faculty satisfaction was an important pre-requisite for student satisfaction. For the satisfaction of the faculty and academic productivity, holistic wellness of faculty is important. Wellness covers physical, emotional, mental as well as spiritual aspects.

In the keynote address, Col. V K Gaur, Adviser, MREI, dwelt upon the concept and application of the happiness quotient. He mentioned that we are basically souls and not just physical bodies. He mentioned dependency, expectation, comparison, poor acceptance and poor understanding of the laws of attention as the five major causes of unhappiness. He stated that we should not be overly materialistic and understand the difference between values and valuables. In the present day society, there was a great need for emotional strength for facing day-to-day situations. He opined that one’s destiny depends on one’s thoughts. In this context he explained the basic thought process and dilated upon the MIS of soul which included mind (M), intellectual (I) and sanskar (S).

Dr. M M Goel, Professor of Economics, Kurukshetra University built up a case for linking reforms in higher education with personality development. He said that in order to face the challenges of change and competition, we needed to become SMART – simple(S), moral (M), Accountability (A), Responsibility (R) and transparent (T). Holistic development of faculty required six basic components – spiritual quotient (SQ) development, intuition development, mental development, love - yourself attitude and emotional quotient development. Prof. Goel said a teacher needed to become unique with morality, credibility and accountability.
