We have some good news for aspiring Doctors, Surgeons, Physiotherapists, Astrophysicists and Healthcare Specialists. Now there are more radical options for M.B.B.S graduates who have a passion for research. Premier research institutes in India are ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research), CIMAP, CCMB (Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology), and St. John's Research Institute. They provide you with a relevant platform so that you can perform research in numerous areas and amplify your skills.

You can also join World Health Oragnisation (WHO) projects through contacts. Research can be broadly divided into basic science research (like lab work), cross sectional or other types of community studies or clinical trials or clinical research. If you have to join institutes like ICMR then you have to clear the NET (National Eligibility Test). Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) admits for Ph.D and M.Sc courses at Mankhurd Mumbai.

If you have an inclination towards research in Microbiology or Forensic Medicine, you can avail courses from numerous medical colleges in India, but these should be recognised by the Medical Council of India. After completing MD in Microbiology, you can pursue research, laboratory or quality control work in Pharmaceutical and Medical Industries as well as study the effects of drugs on different micro-organisms. With an MD in Forensic Science you can work in the field of Criminal Science where you may have to conduct postmortem examinations on dead bodies to know the root cause of the death.

For those who are interested in Astronomy, Astrophysics or Space Science, you can either take up B.Sc in physics or math and then M.Sc and Ph.D in Astronomy, Astrophysics or Space Sciences or pursue a BE/B.Tech in Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering, followed by an M.Tech and Ph.D in Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline. Possessing mathematical skills and computer proficiency is a must.

Astronomy and Astrophysics are taught as special M.Sc Programmes in a number of universities including; Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, Satyendra Nath Bose National Centre for Basic Science, Kolkata, Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, Birla Institute of Technology & Sciences, Pilani etc. After an advanced course in Space Sciences, you can be employed as a Research Scientist with several research institutes and government organisations like the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and so on. The programme is specially designed to prepare graduates for research and doctoral studies in cutting-edge areas in Science and Technology.
