Giving the stereotype that only low scorers and male students study in evening colleges a big challenge, increasing number of students are enrolling for various courses in the evening colleges of Delhi. With cut off gap between the regular and evening colleges narrowing down each year, they aren’t the low scorers but they want to earn while they learn.

Students who want to enrol for professional courses or are interested in part time jobs come to evening colleges. Since the classes in most of the evening colleges start after 2 PM, it enables students to balance their work and study schedule perfectly. Since more students with higher percentage are enrolling in various courses in evening colleges, none could now say that students in such institutes are uncompetitive to their morning college counterparts.

The perception that only male students, low scorers and limited courses are offered in evening colleges is changing fast, really fast. Besides this, the gender ratio is improving too as in most of the evening colleges are co-educational colleges. This further has resulted in the better intake of students. As per P.K. Khurana, principal of Shaheed Bhagat Singh (Evening) College, 45 percent of its students are girls.

Moreover, evening colleges also address the low placement concerns that earlier stood in the way of increasing the students’ strength. Like its morning counterparts, evening colleges are also providing on-campus placements other than offering opportunities for extracurricular activities like dance, music, dramatics, debates, fine arts etc.

With a meagre 3 to 5 percent drop in the first cut off list of evening colleges as compared to their morning counterparts, it seems the former is bridging the gap fast and day when both will be at par with each other does not seem too far either. With evening colleges transforming in terms of infrastructure and demographics, the flux of student is from all over the India now, which was earlier limited to Delhiites only.

As the gender ratio increases, so does the number of students who are serious about their studies. The discipline has improved and maintained as well making evening colleges in Delhi very much like the mainstream ones. These institutes are now considered a good option for students who have planned to do more professional courses and those who are doing some part time jobs.
