If you perform well initially in the engineering course, irrespective of the college you are at, you may soon automatically be offered with the opportunity by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT’s) to complete the rest of your undergraduate engineering programme in one of their campus’s and also earn the coveted Ph. D from there!
The decision was announced by a panel that was set up by the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry under Anil Kakodkar (former energy commission chairman) to create reforms for IITs to increase the number of PhDs from the IIT’s. In the process, the panel suggested a strategy to allow the IITs to pick 2500 brilliant third year students at other engineering colleges and allow them an opportunity to study at the institutes.
As per the blueprint of the proposal, you will be allowed to complete you B.Tech at the IITs and then also pursue a Ph.D. at the prestigious engineering institutes.
A member of the panel said that the proposal, if implemented, would create a win-win situation as the selected students will be able to pursue a dream education at the IITs and the institutes will get students ready to take up research studies.
While the report was presented before HRD Minister Kapil Sibal last week, students are awaiting the decision eagerly. However, several faculty members of the IIT’s have expressed discontent with the proposal stating the incapacity of the IIT’s to absorb the additional students due to excessive work burden.
In retrospect, the panel has suggested the HRD ministry should increase the annual fee for the institutes from Rs.50, 000 a year toRs.2 - 2.5 lakh per year.
The IITs had already increased their intake of doctoral students and had also increased their output of PhDs to around 1000 every year.
