With a few days to go for the counseling process and subsequently, college admissions to close for engineering colleges in various parts of India (assuming they are not full yet), it seems that there is a last minute trend of attracting the students to their colleges by offering scholarships for students scoring an aggregate of 80% or more in Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry put together. In addition, colleges are also offering freebies like laptops and tablets, hostel accommodation for free and trips to universities abroad!
Experts have maintained that 2013 will see a dip in the number of students taking admission to engineering colleges (around 60, 000). Officials have said that more than 10,000 seats are sure to go vacant even before admissions to government quota seats begin.
Engineering colleges has also drawn up a structure to that will allow students to spend lesser on a course as compared to government colleges. While tuition fee waivers act as a strong catalyst to attract students, education consultants advise students to not be lured into such offers as they backfire many times as colleges always find a way of extracting the money from students some way or the other.
Even studying abroad for a few semesters at a stipulated fee as an added feature is a disguised attempt for students to pay up more for their education. Unless a student receives an invitation to study in a foreign university, where he/ she will be entitled to a stipend for sustainability, studying abroad just for the sake of it, is a masked attempt that will make the student spend more than they signed up for.
Students should do their background work. There are enough government schemes for the underprivileged and first generation learners, besides government quota seats in India. Hence it is best for students to stay away from such offers, say academics.
