BRIMS had planned an educational tour for their PGDM students to Singapore from 18th January to 24th January 2022. Dr Vijay Bedekar, Chairman Vidya Prasarak Mandal, encouraged the students to make the most out of this trip and make a lifetime experience. All five days blinked to notice that Singapore is truly fascinating and different from other countries. It is one of the wonderfully developed countries and one should surely visit in their lifetime, says Tejal Thakkar (PGDM student). She shares her experience on the development of Singapore and their business strategies which make Singapore a developed nation. The tour started with the visit of students to National Library of Singapore. It is the flagship building of the National Library Board, bringing together the core functions of the old library by incorporating a reference library, known as the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library.
It is one of the best libraries I have ever visited. Although it does not look like a traditional library, it had a good collection. It is a reader retreat if you are in Singapore. 'I really admire the way they have maintained the whole place' - a feedback given by Rahul Rao (PGDM student). Students have shown gratitude to Dr S Agarkar for being such a great guide throughout the visit at the library.
It was a new sunny day 20th January, Friday and students were excited to go on maritime trail series. Singapore Maritime Trails is conceptualised and organised by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore as part of its outreach. Students were taken from the time of the Singapura Kings to the establishment of Singapore as shipping and other maritime activities. It started around the mouth of the Singapore River and moved westwards to the Telok Ayer area and then to the New Harbour of Keppel Harbour. A tour of 2.5 hrs was a roller coaster ride says Unnati Brahme (PGDM Student).
On the same day, students visited the National University of Singapore. Students interacted with 3 eminent speakers in their classroom. They experienced a life-long learning from the epitome of knowledgeable speakers. The session was started by Mr.Dutta who briefed them about Communication and new media learning. It was then taken over by Mr Sameer Deshpande, who highlighted new trends in management. The day ended by 10 life mantras shared by Mr Rohit Ambekar.
On 21st January they visited new water plant that was a guided tour of the most high-tech water treatment plant in the world – one capable of turning sewage into drinking water. Water is of prime importance to Singapore as water is imported from Malaysia, so they have created 17 reservoirs to preserve every drop of rainwater to convert that into drinking water. Every Drop counts – a thump rule adopted by all PGDM students after the visit.
On 22nd January students were thrilled to visit Sentosa Island a barren land that was converted into an amusement park.
The 500-hectare resort island is home to an exciting array of themed attractions, lush rainforests and golden sandy beaches. The day ended at Sentosa with a cherry on the top by Wings of Time – an award winning night laser show.
23rd January early morning they left for Singapore Management University a publicly-funded autonomous university in Singapore that specialises in business and management studies. SMU is ranked as one of Asia's top universities. Its state of art technology and infrastructure makes it a great place to learn says Dipti Periwal, PGDM Coordinator. Students had interacted with Mr Chris – Director - International Trading Institute. It is the first trading institute in the world to be set up within a university. He highlighted the growth of Singapore and compared it with its competing nations like China.
Learn how Ikea became the world's biggest furniture store was the vision of the director- Dr Nitin Joshi so on the day of departure 24th January, they visited world’s largest home furnishing store- IKEA. The store was visited to enable students to study their Business model as they noticed that most of the pieces can be self-collected and self-assembled. Students also visited their logistic department and witnessed that packaging and dispatching were so smooth.
Finally, it was time to say goodbye to Singapore with lots of memories and leanings. Students treasured with them that Singapore has Speed and the technology which runs into their blood, their Customer centric approach, the lion city has very strong governance and a sturdy judiciary system. The country depicts in their work the proverb, ‘Stitch in Time saves Nine’, which was the best take away from Singapore by the students.
