Foundation Course: Business, Entrepreneurship, and Management
Aim : “Stimulating the potential to develop entrepreneurial orientation through innovation and creativity” That’s what the curriculum pines for.
THE HIGH : Learning about carrying out a business, business ethics, risk-bearing, management. Since business is an inclination for many of us, this one gets thumbs up.
THE CHALLENGE : the first challenge is for those who have a dormant appetite for risk and travails of entrepreneurship. Further, projects range from studying about Gandhi’s model of trusteeship to unsung entrepreneurs to rural areas business to corporate social responsibility to writing a business plan.
Foundation Course: Governance and Citizenship
Aim : to equip us with the zest to overcome the challenges of contemporary India
THE HIGH : Citizens promoting corruption and black money, Case studies on facilities and working of hospitals and schools, Study of protest movements against corruption, black money, land acquisition and displacements and lots more, I bet there’s going to be a string of sting operations.
THE CHALLENGE : Why corruption cases do not reach the logical end in India?
When you are supposed to answer questions like these, it’s time to give up.
Foundation Course: Geographic and Socio-Economic Diversity
AIM : Develop a nuanced understanding of diversity, development and dilemmas
posed by diversity , Interrogate economic development, its inclusiveness and sustainability.
THE HIGH : who would not love to do a project on learning to use Google maps, Migration fields of Rickshaw wallahs/Taxi Walla in your locality, or for that matter Malls and Kirana shops, Shopping centres?
THE CHALLENGE : we have got some real-life observations to make, and some cultural barriers to break.
Foundation Course: Building Mathematical Ability
AIM : The syllabus manifesto conveys, “This course is designed to provide a hands-on experience to the student for gaining insight into the world of data for building models; and for providing a glimpse into the practical power of the world of numbers.”
THE HIGH : If you are into number-crunching, then … cheers!
THE CHALLENGE : A bit of encryption, Euclid and Ramanujan, peppered with a bit of stats, is good news for those who detested maths throughout schooling and feared when the FC were announced. So, no challenge except that now its REAL MATHEMATICS, implying that the projects are going to be a real exhaustion.
Foundation Course: Environment and Public Health
AIM : Right from the syllabus, “Awareness of public health hazards posed by our environment, including physical features such as global warming, chemical features such as automobile emissions, contaminants in drinking water, and biological features such as putrefying organic matter”
THE HIGH : environmental pollution, global warming, diseases, yeah, we have done that before…
THE CHALLENGE : Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) that is, in case you know about it. Or don’t.
