Delhi University (DU) has decided to limit the options of students from commerce stream to only languages. Moreover, it has decided to dispense courses such as philosophy, history and political science. This decision of DU is contradicts UGC’s (University Grant Commission) direction incorporating humanities and social sciences with commerce courses. The DU order came into effect from January 2013.
The registrar of DU released a communication on February 14, 2013, which stated that the department of Indian languages and literary studies would arrange cluster classes for students whose choice of subjects could not be met by the university. This effectively means that commerce students will not be able to take up humanities subjects such as sociology, history and political science.
Before the latest directive, DU students studying B.com could take up humanities subjects in their first and fourth semesters, while honors students in the commerce stream could opt for humanities and social sciences papers in their second semester. Academicians, DU teachers and students, all feel the latest move by DU goes against the modern approach of interdisciplinary and flexible learning.
Sources from other reputed universities also cited examples of institutions such as IITs who have a separate department for social sciences. DU rather than withdrawing these courses should realize that humanities and social sciences are important component of education and gave students a better understanding of their social environment and composition.
