With the hope to change the dynamics of Journalism, Delhi University has decided to start an exclusive School of Journalism and Communication from the academic session of 2022-18. The school plans to introduce an integrated five-year masters program as the first course.
Considered as the first major initiative of Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi, the first batch of the MA course will comprise of 30 students. Additionally, the would-be faculty of the School will oversee all journalism and mass communication courses offered at Delhi University and its affiliated colleges.
However, the establishment of the School will not get a green signal unless a consultation with various stakeholders on its name and framework is ascertained.
Speaking about the consultation, Tyagi said, “We are expecting journalists and communication experts to come forward and contribute in building of this school”.
The School may initially function from the Faculty of Arts, North Campus as the university is still contemplating with the idea of running the School either from one of the faculties of DU or from a building of its own established on the land available with the university.
The decision on the mode of admission to the MA course is yet to be taken. However, chances of conducting entrance examination to select students for the course are higher.
The vice chancellor also said that the final blueprint will be shared after the consultation has been made. He also added that it was too soon to speculate about the nitty-gritty of the school framework. The consultation is expected to be held very soon.
The university also plans to offer bachelors, conventional masters, M.Phil and PhD courses at the School of Journalism and Communication in the years to come.
With the establishment of an exclusive Journalism school, Delhi University will be seen entering the arena of ace journalism institutes like Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Xavier’s Institute of Communication (XIC), Asian College of Journalism (ACJ), etc that offer postgraduate courses in this discipline.
