DU College of the Day: Gargi College

Introduction: Gargi College is one of the leading girls’ colleges in the Delhi University. It has courses in Humanities & Arts, Science, Commerce and Education.

History: The College is named after a learned and enlightened female personality from the Vedic Age. As portrayed in the Upanishads, Gargi comes across as the epitome of curiosity and intrigue. She also represents intellect and faith. The motto of the college is to develop every student to be able to symbolize the same characteristics of intellect and inquiry.

Courses: Gargi offers undergraduate, postgraduate and a few add-on courses. It has departments in science commerce and arts; namely, Commerce, Botany, Chemistry, Zoology, Physics, Microbiology, Psychology, Elementary Education etc.

USP: It is a UGC certified college with Potential for Excellence Grant by the University Grants Commission in 2004-2005. The college is known for its holistic approach towards teaching and learning both. That is the reason behind its excellent academic track record. Research at the undergraduate level is being promoted through innovation and experimentation by its departments and the Women’s Development center.

Sports and Extra-curricular Activities: Gargi has a large sports field and has provision for professional training in various sports. The Gargi girls have been selected to represent DU in state and national tournaments in Judo, Basketball, Taekwondo, Volleyball and Tennis. The year 2012 was marked by Gargi students for emerging as chess champions and runners up in Judo in the Delhi University.
