DU Allows Students to Take E-courses, Credits Earned will be Transferred

Taking the aspirations of students who want to learn different subjects while carrying on with their regular college courses into consideration, Delhi University has taken the decision to allow students to take the selected online subjects that other universities offer. The best part is credits earned in the subjects will be transferred to their college mark sheets. Students will be able to avail this service from the UGC next academic year onwards.

The decision came into the being after UGC has issued guidelines to all the central universities to introduce various online courses under the Study Web of Active Learning by Young and Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) – the brainchild of the Modi government. The MHRD recently approved the guidelines regarding the credit framework of the online learning courses which will be effective from next year onwards.

Under the ambitious SWAYAM project of the Indian government, over 2000 online courses are to be made available for students. As per the guidelines, universities won’t be able to deny the credit mobility to any of the students who want to enrol for online courses and subjects, whereas the parent institutes have to give the students equal weightage for the credits they have earned while enrolling themselves to any of the online learning courses.

Any institution will be able to offer 20 percent of the total seats for an online mode of study for a particular programme per semester. The programme is expected to widen the scope of education at the higher level while cutting the cost of education with the help of technological advancements in India. Besides this, the programme will also provide students from the backward areas to avail teaching facilities in any of the reputable institutions offering online courses, thereby bridging the gap in education.

As per the guidelines, UGC will be notifying the SWAYAM portal in June and November every year about the online courses on offer for the upcoming semester. In addition to this, interactive e-content would be made available free of cost to the students who will register themselves for the online courses right from the school to postgraduate level.
