A Common Entrance Test for Medical Graduates: MCI

The level of the various medical examinations held by the different Medical Institutes varies considerably. Therefore, the MCI (Medical Council of India) has plans to introduce an All India exit test, which would be a common parameter to check the competence levels of the medical graduates. The recommendation for the same was made a while back, but recently the Executive Committee and the governing body of the MCI has given it’s nod for a revised version. In the revised version, it has made the test optional for the candidates. Moreover, the candidates who appear for this exam would be given incentives.

MCI’s governing body gave its nod to the proposal that the EC amended on Friday, March 28, 2014. The proposal is sent to the Union Government for its approval.

The Medical Council of India was established in 1934 under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933, now repealed, with the main function of establishing uniform standards of higher qualifications in medicine and recognition of medical qualifications in India and abroad. Its main objectives include:

1.   Maintenance of uniform standards of medical education, both undergraduate and postgraduate.

2.   Recommendation for recognition/de-recognition of medical qualifications of medical institutions of India or foreign countries.

3.   Permanent registration/provisional registration of doctors with recognized medical qualifications,

4.   Reciprocity with foreign countries in the matter of mutual recognition of medical qualifications.
