According to a consensus reached by the Union health ministry and the Medical Council of India (MCI),  students seeking to get into any  government(138 colleges), private medical colleges(133 colleges)and deemed universities for MBBS course in India will have to take part in a Common Entrance Test (CET).
This decision was taken on Monday in a meeting chaired by Union health secretary K Chandramouli. The meeting was also attended by officials of MCI and CBSE.

All the 271 medical colleges offer over 31,000 MBBS seats. As of now, at least 17 entrance tests are held to fill these UG seats.

The first ever CET exam hopes to see at least 8-10 lakh students appearing for it. There were even talks of including AIIMS under this CET. This would effectively mean that AIIMS won't be able to hold its own undergraduate entrance exam. "The top students can choose to join AIIMS. However, more discussions will be held on this matter. The idea is to have one single medical entrance exam in the country," an official said.
