COMEDK 2015: About 9000 Vacant Seats Likely to Result in 2nd Round of Counselling

Counselling for under-graduate engineering courses for the Common Entrance Test (CET) and the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) was completed on Thursday, as per the Supreme Court direction.

According to the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), around 6,000 engineering seats are vacant even after supplementary candidates were allotted seats. The number of vacant seats is less than the previous years, but it does not include surrendered seats. In 2014, 35,000 seats were vacant.

Gangadaraiah, administrative officer of KEA, told a reputed news agency, "The counselling process concluded on Thursday. As per the data, we have over 6,000 vacant seats in the engineering stream and there are candidates still surrendering seats."

Even in COMEDK, the number of vacant seats is significant. "We have completed the counselling process for engineering courses and 9,382 seats are vacant," said A S Srikanth, Chief Executive Officer, COMEDK.

The KEA is considering holding another round of counselling to fill the engineering seats and the proposal has been submitted to the state government. "Even last year, the counselling went on till August 7," a senior KEA official said. He said since seats are available, a second round of counselling can be done by getting the apex court's permission. However, the government needs to approve it first.
