On November 26, 2013, a total of 57 students of Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, came together and took an initiative to clean their campus under a cleanliness drive organized by the Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) of BIT Mesra.
The initiative was part of the “Don’t Waste the Taste” –An Awareness Drive launched by the students for conservation of food resources which are in-exorbitantly wasted in Campus. This initiative was to clean up an empty space between the hostel numbers 10, 11, 12 and 13.
This empty area had become a dumping site of garbage since some time. All the wastage from the hostels’ mess was dumped here, along with other garbage being disposed of here by the students and other people in the campus.
This became a cause of foul odor in the areas within the vicinity and a breeding site for insects, giving rise to potential causes for spread of diseases. This site was cleaned up by the students of EDC.
They made use of brooms and black garbage bags to collect the garbage, which was later on disposed-off properly. Disposable gloves were used as a health precaution. Later, twenty “USE ME” dustbins, made out of waste cardboard boxes, were installed in the area, in order to keep the place clean in future. This was an appreciable effort by the students with very positive results.
