Students with a Master’s degree from Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 7 or above can enrol for Ph.D programmes in Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) without appearing Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
On the 47th meeting of IIT Council on Monday September 16, 2013, it was discussed that students should be encouraged to join Ph.D programmes in IITs. Mr. M. M. Pallam Raju, Chairman of HRD Ministry has focused on many issues such as positioning of IITs globally and also decided to focus on expanding research.
It was also assured that IIT research systems need to work in close association with India’s developmental goals such urban development, defense, manufacturing and energy. On the ranking front, a board of IIT directors is investigating the issue and has already interacted with QS ranking officials to understand the methodology of the ranking agencies and systems.
A review was conducted by the chairman of the Board of Governors (BoGs) of IITs in which the performance of IITs directors was measured on the basis of IIT’s mission and vision. The review was conducted to develop the transparency and accountability of the institute.
A new IIT Council website was introduced to provide information publicly.
IITs have introduced a new leadership development programme to help enhance the leadership qualities of the top management in IITs. This programme is first designed for the senior management and then to be followed by the younger management.
IIT Council has made the decision of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) Advanced to carry on with the examination pattern introduced in 2012.
