There was much confusion earlier this year when the single Joint Entrance Examination for IIT (IIT-JEE) was split into two - JEE Mains and JEE Advanced.

Now, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is proposing to conduct JEE Main twice in the year 2014 – the first one will be in February and the other will be in April.

The final decision regarding this will be taken on 17th September 2013 at a meeting of the Joint Entrance Examination Apex body, reports a leading daily.

While confirming the news, a senior CBSE official said, "The logic is that candidates can take both the exams and the best score of the two will be considered for the JEE-Advanced. Students get a second chance."

If the proposal is approved, the new development will add extra exam preparation pressure on the students who will have to answer an additional test.

Apart from this, the first JEE Mains in February will clash with the state board, CBSE & ICSE board exams.

This means that ICSE and state board students will have to study separate portions of the CBSE syllabus to prepare for the first JEE Main, also to be conducted in February.

However, the CBSE official says it will be ensured that the JEE-Main exam don’t clash with the February board exams. Despite that, the extra exam pressure on students would remain.
