NCERT, CBSE and CISCE, in a recent meeting with the Human Resource Development Ministry, have been advised to introduce percentile methodology in class XII examination. This method is being recommended to prepare students for the competitive exams in future.
The School Education Secretary, the Central Board of Secondary Education Chairman, Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations Head and National Council of Educational Research and Training Director were all part of the meeting. According to sources, Education Secretary advised that CISCE, CBSE and NCERT should devise a method for moderation of marks so that the same method can be induced across all Boards in the country.
The Boards were further advised to seek help from Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), experts from IITs and other reputed institutes in order to develop the percentile methodology.
However, sources say that this was just a preliminary discussion and more meetings may be held to take the final decision.
What is a Percentile Score?
A percentile score or a percentile rank of a student shows his/her performance in an examination against all the other test takers. The percentile score also shows how well a student has performed (on their own) in the examination. Hence, the marks secured by a student in the percentile methodology will decide the marking standards of other students.
