With growing popularity of journalism and mass media as a career option and spurt of institutes teaching such courses, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has joined the bandwagon. From the next academic session this month, mass media studies will be taught as a subject in all CBSE-affiliated schools across the country.

A total of 12,500 schools across the country are affiliated to CBSE.

"We introduced the mass media subject in 2009 in 23 schools spread across Pune, Mumbai and Delhi as a pilot project. Now we will be extending it to all the CBSE schools," said Vineet Joshi, CBSE chairman.

The basic objective for introducing this new subject is to provide more opportunities for the students, Joshi said adding: "Media is a strong medium to influence large numbers of people. The subject will help us prepare students who can report more objectively."

At present, material prepared by CBSE is being used to teach the students, the chairman said.

The National Council of Education, Research and Training (NCERT) has also designed and prepared the content of the courses and is in the process of publishing textbooks for Class 11 and 12.

“The Class 11 book titled Media Studies is spread through five chapters that deals with topics like communication, understanding media, print media: an introduction to journalism, media development and society and advertisement,” an NCERT official said .

Besides the mass media course, new courses such as web designing, logistics, retail management and legal education will also be introduced.
