In order to broaden vocational avenues, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced Mass Media Studies as an elective subject at the senior secondary level from the current academic year. The course which has been launched in few select schools as pilot project will be part of the elective subjects offered to students of class 12, a CBSE official said.
Students pursuing the course will be awarded certificates from reputed media institutes. The syllabus will cover various aspects of film, television, print, radio and internet.

The course will give an insight about the evolution of mass media to understand how its content shapes one’s thoughts, vision, ethics and action.

Understanding of commercial aspect, roles and responsibilities of media professionals and availability of career options in the industry will be part of the course curriculum.
The Board has been expanding the choice of subjects for students at regular intervals with introduction of new subjects particularly in non-conventional spheres of knowledge and skills.

But according to school administration, a lot needs to be done to make vocational courses useful for the students.

“These courses are interesting but universities do not count these subjects for admission, so scoring well in the subject does not really help the student and they remain soft options,” said Ameeta Wattal, principal of Springdales School, Pusa Road, one of the schools that offers media course.

She said: “The principals have voiced their concern and the chairman of CBSE has assured us that he will get in touch with the university officials to get approval for these courses,

so that they are counted for admission.”
So far, the CBSE  has introduced more than 30 vocational courses at senior secondary level.
