As I exited the University Campus after the DU open session, I couldn’t believe that the two entrance exams I had been pinning all my hopes had been quashed.
I was trying to hammer this fact into my mind but I couldn’t believe that our batch had been treated as guinea pigs again. If animal testing is unethical, experimenting every year on our batch doesn’t seem very ethical either.
So here is my vent ...
After my Boards didn’t go as well as I had expected then to, I knew CATE and CJET could be my saving grace. But to my utter dismay, DU has done away with both the exams. Now instead of the entrance exam scores, admission to these courses will be based on our Board percentage. That is where the problem lies.
While English honours requires a sound knowledge of English literature, Journalism prerequisites a flair for creative writing. Unfortunately, none of these aspects is really assessed in the English Board exam. But still DU has decided to go ahead with the Board marks as the sole parameter for admission to these courses. And let me be honest, we are told to refrain from using flamboyant language in our English Board exam for the fear of being penalised for it!
Even a personal interview or group discussion as criterion for the admissions can salvage the situation.
With the Board results being so unpredictable, these entrance tests provided a fair chance to students. But this decision has left the fate of many hanging lose and probably put our future in jeopardy.
