Over the years, engineers have dominated the classrooms the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other business schools. This is because most of the students who clear the MBA entrance exams are from the science and engineering backgrounds. So the question arises, how should the non-engineers go about their preparation for CAT exam and other competitive exams in India? Non-engineers constitute for about 40% of the total test takers. According to the academic head of T.I.M.E. coaching institute, there is not much of a difference in the strategy and focal points between engineers and non-engineers.

Quantitative Aptitude:

QA and Mathematics are not the same things. And this is where it helps the non-engineers. The CAT exam demands only basic math skills that we learn till class 10. This essentially means that your knowledge of basic arithmetic and proportionality tools, numbers, time, speed distance, elementary combinations, algebra, and geometry are more than enough to help you crack the test. Most of the problems require the basic application of skills and thus the engineers or other math lovers do not have an advantage over the others.
Basic mathematical skills are just one side of the QA section. The other parts are more important, which is the ability to perform in a pressure situation, observation skill, decision making, adaptability and finally an ability to comprehend the questions. What is required to inculcate these skills, is practice.

Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation:

The LR and DI sections are more skill-oriented and less knowledge-oriented. Though these sections involve fewer concepts, regular and thorough practice is required in these sections. Practicing under time pressure is important. Whether you are an engineer or a non-engineer, this section is an equaliser in the true sense. To excel in DI, one should be familiar with the application of some of the most common tools related to percentages, proportionality tool, averages, and allegations. The LR involves linear arrangements, circular arrangements, distributions, order and sequencing, selections and binary logic. Mastering these topics can only be done by practicing rigorously.
Non-engineering students need to focus more on the evaluating factors in CAT, i.e. optimisation of speed and accuracy. Prepare for the exam by dividing your time equally for VA, LRDI and quant sections.
