One of the toughest entrance exams in the world, the CAT (Common Admission Test), which is the qualifying examination for admissions to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management is undergoing some changes this year. We have listed them out for you:

  • The number of sections have been reduced. There will only be 2 sections instead of 3. The 2 sections will be “Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation” and “Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning”.
  • The duration of the test has been increased by 5 minutes (from 135 to 140 minutes). The number of questions however, remains the same (120).
  • Students will now have section-wise time limits, i.e. each section will have to be completed in 70 minutes.
  • Unlike the last 2 years, where students could alternate between different sections while giving the online CAT, this year they will have to go through the test sequentially.

Professor Janakiraman Moorthy, CAT 2011 Convener has assured that similar level of difficulty will be maintained across papers. A small number of statistically and psychometrically validated questions are randomly inserted in each question paper as equating blocks. These will be used for assessing post-test equality across the days.

The American firm Prometric that has been conducting the online CAT for the last 2 years, will, in the coming weeks release a practice test to provide candidates with a sneak preview of the 2 sections, as well as the navigation and functionality of the actual test.
