Career Options for an Economics Graduate

Economics can provide a wide range of career options to students who wish to take up this subject for graduation.

Getting a degree in economics can hone your analytical ability, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. You can look for work in manufacturing, transport, communication, banking, insurance, investment and retail. After graduation, you can go for an MBA degree which will enable you to get a corporate job in these fields.

If you are good with numbers and accounts, you can go for finance-related fields – banking, chartered accountancy, company secretaryship, cost accounting and financial analysis.

On the other hand, if you are creative with strong communication skills, then a postgraduate diploma in advertising is another option. Law, too, can be a good option for economics graduates.

You can also pursue a career in travel and tourism, publishing, hotel management, sales and marketing after graduating with a degree in economics.

After getting a master’s degree in economics, you can join the Indian Economic Service through the IES exam which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This is a central government service for economic planning and analysis for government organizations and departments. It is involved with the planning commission and government financial organizations.

You may also become a lecturer in economics, for which you would be required to complete a master’s degree in economics and then pass the National Eligibility Test (NET), for which a minimum of 55% marks at the postgraduate level is essential.
