The Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has announced that the Common Proficiency Test (CPT Paper-Pencil Mode) will be conducted on Sunday, 22nd June, 2014.
About the exam
The Common Proficiency Test (CPT) is conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) to pursue different levels of Chartered Accountancy courses in its institute. Any person who wants to become a member of ICAI and designate himself as a Chartered Accountant in India has to pass this course. It consists of three levels of examinations and three years of practical training under a practising Chartered Accountant. CPT is conducted twice a year (June & December) & IPCC & CA Final exams during the months of May & November.
IPCC or Integrated Professional Competence Course is the second level of Chartered Accountancy examinations. A person can take the IPCC Examination after passing CPT and nine months of study.
CA Final Examination is the last and final level of Chartered Accountancy Examinations. Any person who has passed both the groups of IPCC, during the last six months of articleship can take the Final Examination.

- CPT
- IPCC
- CA Final exam
The 4 subjects on which CPT exam will be based include:
- Fundamentals of Accounting
- Mercantile Laws
- General Economics and
- Quantitative Aptitude
Eligibility Criteria for CA CPT 2014 exam:
- Students who are already registered with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India for the said course on or before 1st April, 2014 and fulfill the requisite eligibility conditions
- Students can register after Class X board exams, but will be eligible to appear for the exam once they complete 10 + 2
- CPT registration is valid for 3 years, after which, a student can opt for re validation
How to Apply for CPT Test 2014:
Applications for Common Proficiency Test is required to be made in the relevant prescribed form as contained in the information brochure, which may be obtained from the Additional Secretary (Examinations), The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, ICAI Bhawan, Indraprastha Marg, New Delhi - 110002 on payment of Rs. 1000/- (Rs.500/- towards examination fee and Rs. 500/- towards cost of application form and Information brochure) per application form.
Common Proficiency Test application forms duly filled in may be sent so as to reach the Additional Secretary (Examinations) at New Delhi not later than 25th April, 2014.
Applications duly filled in will be received by hand delivery at the offices of Institute at New Delhi and at the Decentralized Offices of the Institute at Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Pune up to 25th April, 2014.
The candidates who fill up the examination application form online at http://icaiexam.icai.org from 4th April, 2014 (10.00 hrs) to 25th April, 2014 (17.30 hrs) and remit the fee online by using either VISA or MASTER credit/debit card shall not be charged Rs. 500/- (i.e. cost of application form fee) in order to popularize filling-in of application form online.
Exam Pattern for CPT 2014
- Total marks: 200
- Multiple choice questions (MCQ)
- Negative marking will be given – 25% marks for every incorrect answer
- To qualify a CPT exam, the candidate must obtain 30% marks minimum in each subject
- Candidates will be allowed to opt for Hindi medium question paper booklet for answering the questions
