Miracles are a part of a doctor’s life specially in Neurology because the challenges that the subject of neurology poses for the doctor and the patient are fascinating and enticing. It involves developing deduction skills and learning since neurology is the most logical sciences of medicine. It also has the maximum scope of research and discovery as scientists are still unravelling the mysteries of the brain.

Neurology is different from neurosurgery as it deals with managing patients who have disorders of the brain, nerves and muscles, which do not require surgery for treatment. Neurologists have to meticulously trace the medical history of the patient and minutely study the symptoms to arrive at a precise diagnosis.Neurologists also have to deal with emergencies because cases of brain stroke require immediate intervention.Cases of epilepsy, tuberculosis in the brain, encephalitis due to viruses, and respiratory paralysis due to neurological causes etc need emergency care.

Neurology is an excellent career, very challenging and requiring the utmost dedication. One should be ready for long and intense hard work.About growth prospects Neurology as a science has recently shown newer therapeutic modalities which throw up new challenges. One has to constantly update his/her knowledge.

A neurologist in the government sector would start at around R80,000 to R90000 per month and in the private sector, after a few years experience, would be earning anything from R1.5 lakh to R5 lakh per month.

Skills required to be a good nerologist:
.Should be able to diagnose ailments and prescribe a quick cure.
.Should have the ability to go beyond the call of duty and ensure a patient’s comfort and survival.
.Endless patience to listen to and empathise with a patient.
.Excellent communicative and research skills.

After clearing plus-two in Science with Biology, there is an entrance exam to take admission in a medical college. After completing the basic MBBS one needs to do MD in Medicine/Paediatrics for three years followed by a DM/DNB in Neurology. After this an additional fellowship is ideal.
