In a recent event organised by Jagadguru Rambhadracharya Handicapped University, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar announced saying that currently, close to 2500 scholarships are provided to differently-abled students. In order to avail more benefits from such programmes, the ministry is planning on how to increase this number. With the current education system in the country, the ministry is trying to improve the problems faced by the disadvantaged group, mentioned Mr Javadekar.

As India is a developing country, the education system in the country has to be given more importance than any other system or sector. The UN report also claims that India will be about 50 years late in reaching the global level. But hearing the HRD Minister’s announcement, it has given a ray hope to the country, especially the differently-able group, which constitute about 3% of the country’s population.

So what does the government plan to do for the disadvantaged group?

  • Currently, close to 128 Equal Opportunity Cells are running in many colleges and institutes to provide equal opportunities to the differently-abled social groups.
  • The government plans to give a grant worth INR 2 lacs to the University for the EO cell.
  • IGNOU also plans to come up with a new initiative to open an Indian Sign Language and Research Centre.
