Are IITs only Graduate Academies? Busts Myth!

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are majorly known as graduate academies and have famously been undergraduate colleges. However, more residents at these institutes are now pursuing their master’s degree.

IITs have this perception of being only for undergraduate programmes, as they have distinguished themselves for the quality of their B.Tech degrees. Their brand image is majorly due to the very distinguished performance of its B.Tech students. The main concern was that very less number of students actually opted for postgraduate programmes. Now the tables have turned and the number of students opting for post graduation studies due to the following three reasons-

1. Clampdown on work visas in western nations
2. Boost to startups at home
3. Slowing down of the global economy

If we look at the changes in figures, here are the numbers given below-

Looking at the degree of changes in the last three years, the picture is clear that the number of students pursuing postgraduate programmes is increasing remarkably.

More reasons that cater to these changes in the numbers can be-

• Student population has become more diverse
• Students are provided with choicest hostel cuisine.
• Campuses have become vibrant and ideal location to pursue a career
• Riding to lectures on horseback, knowing everyone in college, unlimited food in the mess and room for each are some of the reasons.

The ratio has shifted positively as more students from smaller towns come to IITs to study. More students prefer pursuing postgraduate degree from IITs due to their high-ranking, academic facilities and availability of R&D labs/equipment, projects, etc.
