Anti-Ragging Measures at IIT Madras, Anna University

Ragging is the menace which infects almost every educational institution of our country. As per AICTE norms, every student undertakes to be liable to expulsion if they indulge in ragging.

Yet, the data from the National Anti-Ragging Helpline (1800-180-5522) shows that between June 2009 and June 2013, 97 cases of ragging were reported from Tamil Nadu.

However, two of the most reputed engineering institutes are all set to welcome the academic year in a campus free of this nuisance.

Anna University claims to have wiped off ragging from the campus. There is strict 12 hour surveillance from 8 am to 8 pm wherein the day is divided into 3 slots; each slot is governed by one convenor. Dr. P Yogesh, convener, Anti Ragging Committee, says "To the best of our knowledge, there have been no cases registered. As Guindy College of engineering, ragging was at its peak. But ever since the formation of Anna University, the menace has been curbed."

Aditya Ishwaran, Second Year student, "The patrol vehicles and the severe punishments have made ragging too scary an offense to commit. For the past 3 years, I haven't heard of a single ragging case."

"The University status gives absolute power. In fact in some cases, even the courts do not interfere in university rules. Hence, our anti-ragging regulations have been successful," said Yogesh.

However, Kanakraj, State President, Student Federation of India, says "In the state of Tamil Nadu and especially in engineering colleges, there is a lack of student participation. The colleges need to involve students. Only democratic measures can bring about effective change."
