AIIMS to Provide Training to Young Doctors for Research

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has decided to provide extensive training for research work to its 67 young doctors, among the 97 newly recruited faculty members.

Professor AB Dey, Dean Research, AIIMS said that they are looking at increasing their research capability. Hence, these young doctors will be trained by the senior faculty in latest research and technology.

The primary objective of this move is aimed to ease the burden on the existing faculty, which is overloaded with clinical work and barely gets time for research. They also added that  this move is to create an environment conducive for research and get back their pre-eminent position as a research institute.

Doctors had been complaining of excess patient load. Out of the sanctioned 625 post, nearly 200 were lying vacant.

A senior faculty member said that departments such as gynaecology, cardiology, neurosurgery, among others have seen a nearly three times rise in the permitted number of patients on a daily basis. The doctors, on most of the days are busy completing paper work till late in the night and hence it becomes impossible for them concentrate on research.

Professor Dey said that they have a research budget of Rs. 5 crore with Rs. 5 lakh grant assigned per researcher. However till last year the total was only Rs.1 Lakh.
