All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has increased the total number of students for the MBBS course to 100 students for its New Delhi centre with effect from the academic session starting in 2022.
The institute will also increase the student intake capacity under foreign national category to 7 apart from these 100 seats meant for the Indian students. Currently, AIIMS admits 77 students in total, which comprises of 72 Indian students and 5 students from foreign countries.
The Director of AIIMS, Dr. M C Misra, made the announcement at the 75th Foundation Day of the medical institute in New Delhi. Speaking on the occasion, Misra thanked his predecessors for shaping the institute with their dedication. He also added that AIIMS has grown massively over time, in terms of delivering services as well as academically.
However, Registrar of AIIMS Dr. Sanjeev Lalwani clarified that the percentage in which seats are distributed amongst different reserved categories will remain unchanged. AIIMS follows seat reservation policy for students belonging to SC, ST, OBC and PH categories.
Apart from New Delhi, AIIMS also have regional centres at Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Rishikesh and Raipur. The regional centres admit only 100 Indian students with no seats for applicants from foreign nationals.
On the postgraduate front, the Director also spoke about increasing the student intake capacity for the course of DM (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery) courses by almost 90% previously.
The director also informed that 1800 beds have been added at the Trauma Centre and facilities at Masjid Moth campus are being expanded. He also disclosed that the institute plans to have 6000 beds by 2026.
