The Lok Sabha was informed on Monday that the government has spent around 1.34% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on higher education during 2013-2014.
As per the publication ‘Analysis of Budgeted Expenditure on Education - 2015’ of the HRD ministry, public expenditure on higher education as a percentage of GDP for the year 2013-2014 was 1.34%, said HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, during the Question Hour.
During XII five year plan, the plan outlay for the department of higher education was INR 110,700 crores compared with the actual expenditure in XI Plan of INR 39,646.82 crores.
Javadekar mentioned that this increase in central plan outlay for the education sector is an increase of about 2.79 times. This presents a determined effort on part of the Centre for raising public spending on higher education.
