Move aside, the Brittney’s, Lindsay’s and Kim’s. We don’t need you to tickle our funny bones. We got it in us (and we got plenty) to make it to the headlines! And with what panache! One would think that with so much going on in the world right now, with the killings, sieges, missing planes, Ebola and stuff, we (those unaffected) would be a more thankful lot. Blah blah! Who has the time to think of the serious stuff, when a temporary lapse in judgment (I pray so!) could be a source of entertainment for us millions?
Last day of 2014… It is that time of the year when we (more often than not) retrospect and resolute, in the hope that the New Year is brighter, more promising and full of adventure. I went through the ordeal of retrospection last night, and here’s what I could think of! (Yes, I am shallow)

Ice Bucket Challenge
What started out as an encouragement of donations to research for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) disease, was quickly turned into a fad of mere fun and dare by the whole world. Students, film stars, and business tycoons alike spread the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge like wildfire (probably without even knowing its meaning & intention). I don’t know how much money it was able to raise, but we did see a couple of people, with a whole lot of time in their hands, challenge and nominate (read dare) their comrades into pouring a bucket full of ice on themselves!
Twerking
This will put Gangnam style to shame. Created, popularized by Miley Cyrus at an award function, Twerking (all sorts! Search YouTube to believe me) took to an all-time high, with celebrities, party hoppers & wannabe’s imitating this style of dance. We, on the other hand, are still trying to come to terms with it.
Selfie
This one was harmless fun and still continues to be a rage. It has also ushered in self-consciousness (in terms of how one looks, AT ALL TIMES) and narcissism. As if the world did not have self-obsessed people already! Why?

Poor girl. She had to be the butt of jokes from so many people just because she didn’t know who the President of India was. Well, do you know? Do you also know what India’s national song is? Well, maybe not. But doesn’t matter (as long as nobody knows about it). Stereotyping is wrong. Oh so wrong.

Love Jihad, also known as Romeo Jihad, is an alleged activity under which, young Muslim boys and men reportedly target young girls belonging to non-Muslim communities for conversion to Islam by feigning love! Like, really? Please don’t mock love, you social hypocrites! Yogi Adityanath is a saffron-robed BJP MP from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh who has been observed delivering incendiary speeches in Uttar Pradesh, including those on conversions and religious riots. Seriously Yogi ji, don’t you have roads to build and provide electricity to every household in your jurisdiction?
