Undivided Andhra Pradesh, while it existed, was the one of the largest education providers with 718 Engineering colleges that accounted for approximately 3.5 Lakh engineering seats.  Statistics also reveal that Joint Engineering Entrance (JEE) exam and JEE (Advanced) had maximum takers from Andhra Pradesh, closely followed by Uttar Pradesh. However, about 1.5 Lakh engineering colleges had no takers because only about 25% landed getting relevant engineering jobs after their B. Tech degrees. Inspite of this, if data is to be believed, until 2013, Andhra Pradesh was the largest state to churn out engineers every year.

2013 statistics reveal that only 61,000 students from Andhra Pradesh attended counselling for admissions to 313 engineering colleges (affiliated to JNTU-H), with a total of 1.65 lakh seats.

The number of colleges affiliated to the three Jawaharlal Nehru Technological Universities, which accounted for  90% of the engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh, reveal that colleges from the Telangana region was the worst hit by this deficit of students. But even then, Telangana government revoked recognition to 174 engineering colleges leaving about 70, 000 engineering seats empty.

As a result, more and more engineering students are opting to study overseas or pursue an alternative degree. There are various reasons for that:

Low teaching standards & poor infrastructure

Even if colleges beat the sacking dagger, they did not have enough funds to support quality infrastructure or hire good and qualified educators. This resulted in poor quality of students in the market, who were under qualified for the job at hand.

No industry interface

Due to lack of funds, developing an industry interface and encouraging global exposure was in the lowest rung of importance in the education system in Andhra Pradesh & Telangana. As a result, students were already at a loss from their national counter parts.

Weak job market

Even after getting a degree, it has become very competitive to get a job with a justified ROI. Due to incompetent education given out, companies looked for alternative options.

Influx of qualified professionals

Besides AP & Telangana, other engineering graduates from across the country (with probably a better education background) made it to the jobs in the region. Obviously, companies preferred it that way!

Alternative course options

Looking at the dismal future in engineering in Andhra Pradesh & Telangana, more and more students opted for alternative courses like MS & MBA as their career preference/ choice.

Boon in disguise

The missed opportunity in Andhra Pradesh proved to be a boon in disguise for global jobs like the USA, who were getting intelligent, smart and qualified engineers at almost half the cost of their own resources.

As L Venugopal Reddy, Chairperson, AP Council for Higher Education views this situation as a loss of opportunity for India. He believes that quality is the main gap in the engineering education system in Andhra Pradesh & Telangana. What do you think?
