The IIM (Indian Institutes of Management) Council held a meeting yesterday that was chaired by Mr. Kapil Sibal, Union Minister of HRD & attended by Dr. D.Purandeshwari, Secretary Higher Education & the Chairpersons and Directors of the 13 IIMs. A lot of important points were discussed and some decisions were taken:

  • Every 3 years, each of the IIM would be reviewed externally & would then be discussed in the IIM Council.
  • The progress of the new IIMs was discussed. The land issues related to all the new IIMs have been resolved & directors for all of them have been selected except for IIM Kashipur.
  • The IIM Council also noted that the revised Memoranda of Association (MoA) and Rules of Ahmedabad and Indore have been finalized. The process of revising the MoAs of IIM Bangalore, Lucknow & Kozhikode is going on.
  • The Council was told that the government has approved a sum of Rs 95 crore to enable funding for another 100 Ph.Ds from the IIMs. This step was taken to enhance the research taking place in the IIMs & to increase the output of Ph.Ds from the existing IIMs.
  • The Director of IIM Bangalore suggested on bringing out a quarterly journal of IIMs showcasing the research in the IIMs. IIM Calcutta & Kozhikode offered to jointly organise an international conference which can work as platform to learn from the best management thinkers.
  • Another important decision that was taken was that all the IIMs would share their admission information & coordinate their counselling systems. This would ot only make the admission procedure easier for the new IIMs but would also ensure that no seat in the new IIMs remains vacant.  As far as the common admission policy was concerned, it was decided that each IIM would maintain their own policy.
  • The IIMs also plan to jointly organise an international “road-show” to attract more international students & thus build up more diversity on the campus.
  • The Council also felt that there should be programmes in areas like energy management, academic institution management, health management, agriculture management etc. These programs would be relevant to solving the problems of the country & the society. It was decided that a task force should be set up to establish these programmes.
