Nine Mumbai students have achieved the highest marks in the world in a range of individual subjects in the November 2014 and June 2015 Cambridge International Examinations series (Cambridge IGCSE®, Cambridge International AS Level and Cambridge International A Level).
Additionally, 30 students from the city have also made it to the national list of toppers for individual subjects – achieving the highest marks for their subject out of all Cambridge students in India.
Of the twenty-two ‘world toppers’ in India most have achieved top marks in Mathematics examinations, followed by Physics. In addition to the more traditional subjects, this year’s toppers show the range of subjects that are available through the Cambridge curriculum, from Travel & Tourism to Psychology.
Ruchira Ghosh, Regional Director South Asia, Cambridge International Examinations, said "We congratulate our students from India for another year of remarkable performance and high achievement. Such accomplishments are the result of their hard work and commitment to their learning. The Cambridge curriculum is designed to prepare learners not only for academic success in examinations, but also for life at university and beyond.
We, therefore, place emphasis on a learner’s holistic development and focus on how they can best learn. Developing skills in critical thinking and creativity go hand in hand with getting good marks; with the correct learning method comes academic success. This is only possible with the support of Cambridge teachers, schools and parents, who help students to learn, discover and achieve. We wish all of this year’s toppers success in their future endeavours."
There has been a substantial increase in the popularity of Cambridge qualifications in India and around the world. There are now over 350 Cambridge schools in India, where over 70,000 exam entries for Cambridge qualifications were made in June in both (10th and 12th class), with a 12% increase in entries compared with 2014. In India there was a 10% increase in entries for Cambridge IGCSE (10 board exam), with more than 40,000 entries.
