The Delhi University’s north campus was abuzz with applicants from different parts of the country, including many from the northeastern states of the country.
More than 3,000 of the varsity’s students are from various states in the northeast. These students face several problems, mostly because of a “language barrier” and cultural differences.
“We are not very fluent in Hindi and most DU officials do not talk in English,” said an applicant from Manipur.
There are several groups, however, that have been helping applicants from the region. Volunteers of the Naga Students’ Union-Delhi (NSUD), the Kuki Students Association (KSA), the Mizoram Students Union and the Manipur Students Union are some of the groups who are helping those students from the northeastern states who come to them.
Meanwhile, helpdesks were set by the NE student unions at the Faculty of Arts, where volunteers helped clarify the doubts and queries of the aspirants. The unions claimed to have helped more than 600 applicants fill in their forms since the application process began.
“There is a lot of confusion among the applicants of the region regarding the four-year undergraduate programme. We are in constant touch with the university officials. We also went to the Open Day sessions to understand the programme better, so that we could help those in need,” says J Maivio, chairman of the NSUD.
