Seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in collaboration with Infosys, TCS, Cognizant and Nasscom are going to introduce a bunch of free, online courses. The concept behind introducing these courses is to increase the employability of engineering graduates.
The courses will be launched using the massive open online courses (MOOCs) platform, which has become a rage in the world of higher education, reports a leading daily.
The model of Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is similar to Stanford University’s Coursera and Udacity.
The first three courses in Computer Science are likely to be introduced this year in October.
Lakshmi Narayanan, vice-chairman of Cognizant, says a large number of students who need to be educated and trained would benefit immensely from this programme.
MOOC makes it possible to provide high-quality education from top universities to students across the world, online and for absolutely free.
"We are currently working out the details of the programme in consultation with Nasscom," says Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director, IIT-Madras.
