Technologists might sit at their desks and visualise and conceptualise but at the end of the day it is the technicians who execute all these mechanisms and techniques. The government of India too recognises the need for trained technical manpower for the technological upgradation of industrial production, services, productivity and innovation which can in turn contribute to the planned growth of the country's economy. The Delhi government for example has a “Directorate of Training and Technical Education” that plans, develops, implements, monitors and evaluates different policies related to technical/vocational education.
There are numerous Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) spread across the country which are imparting training in at least 25 different trades of one year, two years and three years duration on both full-time & part-time basis.
Since the area of operation of technicians is mainly engineering, one has to know the principles and theories of science, engineering and mathematics. But to get dmission to an ITI one just needs to pass the 10th standard. e trade specified. The duration of course may vary from one year to three years depending upon trade opted. After completion of desired period of training the person is eligible to appear in the AITT (All India Trade Test) conducted by NCVT ( National Council for Vocational training ). After successfully passing AITT, you are awarded the National Trade Certificate (NTC) in their concerned trade by the NCVT. After passing an ITI course, one may opt to undergo practical training in his trade in an industry for a year or two. Again the person has to appear & pass in a test to be conducted by NCVT to get the National Apprenticeship Certificate. Most of ITIs impart training in technical trades like electrician, fitter, plumber, diesel mechanic, Computer Operator & Programming Assistant (COPA), electrical mechanic, Information Technology, Mechanic Computer Hardware, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Turner, Welder, etc.
For laboratory technicians the basic eligibility criteria for a Bachelors in Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) is 10+2 or equivalent with Science subjects or Pre- University Vocational course from a recognized Board with laboratory Technology as Vocational subject. BMLT is a 3 year course. The eligibility for a diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) (2 year long) is to clear your 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognised university or board. There are also other certificate courses for lab technicians which needs 10+2 as the eligibility. Courses are also offered by colleges, universities as well as hospitals. Such hospitals are usually affiliated with a college or university.
