An Attempt at Some Clarity on FYUP by Jairam Ramesh, Rural Development Minister

Grievances regarding Delhi University’s Four Year Undergraduate Programme has reached our HRD minister M M Pallam Raju, from an unlikely source, rural development minister Jairam Ramesh.

In a meeting, where UGC chairperson Ved Prakash was also present, Ramesh put forth his concerns as a parent and a citizen of the nation.

Ramesh commented, “No assurance has been given. Mr Raju is trying his best to salvage the situation. The UGC monitoring committee is one step. But the VC has disregarded the minister's advice to set up a broad-based counterpart committee within DU”.

The rural development minister, who also met Hamid Ansari, DU chancellor, feels the FYUP is an accomplished fact. Jairam Ramesh said that the chancellor is also agitated about this latest change.

The overwhelming view point is that the DU chancellor Dinesh Singh is on ‘auto pilot’.

Nonetheless, efforts are still on an advance to come up with a solution. MPs across various parties also protested against the FYUP, in the meeting of national monitoring committee for education of SCs, STs and for persons with disabilities.

Even though no assurance was given, some say there is a sliver of hope that is intact. . " The ministry is under tremendous pressure. A last-minute intervention cannot be ruled out," a source said
