School of Chemical and Biotechnology, SASTRA University, has been ranked first among private biotechnology schools in the BioSpectrum Biotech School Survey 2011. The university was ranked top biotech school during 2007-08 and 2008-09, a release said.

Evaluation by BioSpectrum is based on excellence in infrastructure, quality of faculty, industry interactions and placement records. This year, SATRA University emerged first with top scores in faculty, placement and infrastructure. The university's curriculum is industry-relevant with emphasis on cutting-edge research and experiential learning.

The merit-based admissions, state-of-the art facilities, global visibility through collaborations with renowned universities such as Harvard–MIT, Johns Hopkins, Leicester and Windsor, and multi-national companies such as Seimens, and Larsen & Tubro, have enabled SASTRA to retain the top spot in India's biotechnology education.

The university has filed five Indian and five international patents in the past three years. The school has continuously been launching research initiatives in thrust areas, including pharmaceutical technology, medical nanotechnology, drug design and the Indian systems of medicine in order to respond to the emerging scientific challenges.

At a function last week, S. Swaminathan, Dean, sponsored research & director, Centre for Nanotechnology & Advanced Biomaterials (CeNTAB), received the award in Bangalore from Lalji Singh, former director, Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, and presently Vice Chancellor, Banaras Hindu University.
