“Youth Power 2013-14”, a social leadership Programme conducted at Amity University on April 22, 2014 which aimed at grooming Amity students to become leaders and change initiators.
 
Noida with eight teams from Amity International Schools giving tough competition to each other for lifting the coveted Winners’ Trophy and win the title of “Youth Envoy”.
 
Youth Power is an initiative of Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools. The programme, through its six year long journey, has created many social leaders, touched countless lives and has taken significant steps for bringing a change in the society. “Youth Power 2013-14” was dedicated to the cause of women, who has nurtured the society, yet awaits her due.
 
The young leaders from all Amity International Schools worked on different social issues related to women throughout the year including “Sanitation and Hygiene for Women”, “Self Defence for Women”, “Nutrition and Women”, “Abuses faced by Urban Women”, “Respect for Women”, “Stop Dowry, protect women”, “Vocational Training to empower women” and “Education for Women” with an endeavor to bring tangible difference to the condition of women in society. As part of the programme, students formed teams, decided the cause they wanted to work for, did intensive research through field study, surveys, case studies, designed their plan of action, generated funds for the cause by organizing small activities, worked with NGOs’ at Grass root level and finally presented their work in the form of presentation during the Finale of the programme.

The valediction was graced by Padamshree Shovana Narayan- world renowned Kathak Danseuse, Ms. Rashmi Singh- Executive Director, National Mission for Empowerment of Women, Government of India; Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools and Ms Shamina Shafiq, Member, National Commission for Women Ms. Veera Sharma- Managing Editor, The Global Times presented a brief overview of the programme.
 
Applauding Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan for giving such a meaningful and thought provoking platform to Amity students, Padamshree Shovana Narayan said the Youth Power provides an excellent opportunity to students for thinking, introspecting and acting in the interest of the society. She stressed that root cause of all the problems in society is uncontrolled desires, accompanied by the greed to make easy money. People should work hard and toil to earn the privileges they want to enjoy in their lives, and then only they would be able to understand the value of those privileges. She congratulated all the students for the diligent efforts they have put in to bring changes in the life of people around them and motivated them to continue their efforts in future.
 
 
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Rashmi Singh -Executive Director, National Mission for Empowerment of Women, Government of India commended the maturity displayed by students in handling and working for different sensitive issues. She opined that whatever we strive to achieve as part of Millennium Development Goals whether eradicating poverty, hunger, bringing down Infant Mortality rate, is not possible without focusing on the issues related to women. She encouraged students to be aware, informed and help those who are not informed. She stressed that in India, the need is to create level playing field and ensure equal opportunities for women in urban and rural areas.
 
Expressing her views and congratulating students, Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International schools said, “It is really overwhelming to see today’s generation so well connected with the issues afflicting the society and also, working towards resolving the same through small and humble initiatives.” She encouraged students to not only aim at becoming literate but educated so that they could make informed choices and work together to make world a better place to live in.
 
The teams were judged by an eminent jury comprising Prof K K Varma, Institutional Partnership Director, Childreach India, Yaaminey Mubayi, a Social and Institutional Development Specialist and Java Singh, entrepreneur and academician.
 
The team from Amity International School, Pushp Vihar comprising of Team Leader Niharika Khanna, Anchit Sam, Shireen Chanana, Twinkle Taneja were declared the Winners for their project “Nutrition and Women”. The students through various activities such as “Flash Mobs”, “Nukkad Nataks”, and “Sand Art Activity” disseminated the awareness about the importance of eating nutritious meals for the women. They made women aware of the low cost food products which could be easily added in the daily routine to ensure adequate nutrition and nourishment in the females including Ragi, Soy products, Jowar, Bajra, Guavas, Peanuts, Beans, Carrots and Sattu.
 
The team from Amity School , Gurgaon Sector-46 comprising of Team Leader Shrishti Kajaria, Aditya Thakral, Saumya Mittal and Samriddhi Nagar was declared Second Runners Up for their project “Vocational Training to Empower Women”.
 
The team from Amity School, Noida comprising of team Leader Kripi Badonia, Sarthak Dilawari, Isha Kalra and Shimona Mohan with their project “Self Defence for Women” lifted First Runners up Trophy.
 
Also present during the occasion were Ms. Divya Chauhan, Chairperson, Amity Institute of Fine Arts and Amity School of Fashion Technology, Ms. Pooja Chauhan- Vice Chairperson, Amity Humanity Foundation, Ms. Sapna Chauhan- Vice Chairperson, Amiown, Ms Jaishree Chauhan and heads of other Amity Institutions.
