Second Semester Delhi University students who have not secured 66.67% attendance will have to drop one academic year before they can attend second semester classes again in January 2013. This means students losing an entire year but colleges are firm on taking stringent action against the defaulting students.

Though DU colleges are still in the process of tabulating attendance for the entire semester, they have sounded out a warning for those students who fail to meet the minimum attendance criteria.

"If students have below the minimum requirement of 66.67% attendance, they will be detained. Students will not be promoted to second year (third semester) and will end up repeating one year," said IS Bakshi, principal of Dyal Singh College

While Dyal Singh College detained nearly 190 students in the previous semester, close to 350 students, in total, had been detained across the university.

But there is a two-fold mechanism in play. Students who had cleared their first semester but are facing detention in the second semester will not lose their admission. On the other hand, students who are yet to clear their first semester and are being detained this semester, will lose their seat in the college, said SK Garg, chairperson of DU's high powered committee.

Students said they did not have an idea of their attendance through the semester - a factor that would have been a benchmark for their overall attendance. “Authorities refused to show us our attendance when we asked them saying that we would get to know by May,” said a student of DCAC.
