Delhi School of Economics organized a debate competition on September 7-9, 2013.
Debate was organized only for MBA students. Students from IIT Roorkee, Delhi Technical University, Delhi school of economics etc were participated in the debate. Topic of the debate was "The house believes that Dictators are born out of the chaos of democracy"
Participants were divided into groups. Each team had 2 speakers, one for and one against the motion. Every speaker got 4 minutes to speak, post which the participants and judges could question them.
Bhanu Pratap Singh and Shishir Arya FMS 1st Year student had won the debate competition.
Shishir talked about how Hobbes theory explained that in the absence of political order and law, everyone would have unlimited natural freedoms, including the "right to all things" and thus the freedom to plunder, rape, and murder; there would be an endless "war of all against all". Though the Sovereign's edicts may well be arbitrary and tyrannical. He argued that absolute government is the only alternative to the terrifying anarchy of a state of nature.
While Bhanu’s stand was that it is not the chaos that breeds a dictator, it is the impotency of the society that creates one. He argued that when a society is afraid of fighting for its cause, it aligns all its power in one person who inevitable ends up abusing it. He also stated that the chaos in democracy is just used as a scapegoat in such a case we were given points on the content, the presentation and how we answered the interjections.
HTC congratulates both the students for FMS
