Students planning to take the University Grants Commission’s National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) faced problems for the sixth day on Thursday as the website through which the students were to apply was barely functional.
This is the first time that the application procedure for the UGC-NET exam is being conducted only on the website.
“While I had completed the first phase of registration in early April, I decided to leave the last part for end of April but the website is not working at all. I have been trying to get a print-out of the challan for the last six days but have failed,” said Sanjeev Misra, an MPhil student at Delhi University. The UGC, meanwhile, has extended the last date for applications to May 4.
“We have received many complaints but the website is working fine. The problem is arising because of heavy traffic. We have extended the deadline over this very reason. We will also accept handwritten forms from students who are nor able to register online,” said a UGC official. Students say that even an attempt to register a complaint online is not successful.
“Neither am I being able to complete the registration nor file a complaint. They should have anticipated the rush on the last days and made sure that the website is functional. Making the application electronic should be done only when the authorities can handle it so that students do not suffer,” said Manjari Kamath, another applicant.
The UGC-NET exam is going have only objective questions this year and there will be no negative marks for wrong answers.
Close to four lakh candidates have already applied using online registration for UGC-NET 2012, the UGC official added.
