No concession will be given to OBC candidates in JNU’s Ph. D and M. Phil entrance exams for the upcoming academic session. However, the Other Backward Classes (OBC) candidates will be provided with a relaxation of marks in the eligibility criteria for the PhD and M. Phil entrance exams of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

The decision was taken at a standing committee meeting held last week. The meeting was attended by deans of all the schools of the university.

Until now, as per the eligibility criteria for admissions to JNU, the General and OBC category candidates were treated at par. The candidates belonging to both the categories must have obtained at least 55% aggregate marks in the qualifying exam to be eligible for entrance exams of JNU. The candidates belonging to SC/ST category must have secured at least 34% aggregate marks in the qualifying exam to be eligible for JNU entrance exams.

Earlier, the OBC candidates were provided a concession of 10% in the entrance exam, which meant that the candidates from General category had to score minimum 40 aggregate marks in the qualifying exam whereas the OBC candidates had to secure at least 36 aggregate marks to qualify the entrance exam.

The candidates belonging to OBC category have been demanding the relaxation at both the stages. As per the sources, the provision for concession at both the stages would have been unfair. Consequently, the officials decided to provide a relaxation to OBC category candidates at eligibility stage of JNU admissions only.
